How to install Windows 10/11 on a new hard drive.

If I knew this already, I would’ve saved countless hours over the last week trying to install a new copy of Windows 10 onto a new Samsung SSD.

Normally you should just be able to install the new SSD into the computer and install from a USB, but I kept having issues where the target disk wouldn’t show up or eventually where the disk did show up but couldn’t write to it because Windows doesn’t support installation onto remote USB devices, so this is what I did instead since the normal method wasn’t working.

Things you’ll need:

  1. The disk you want to install the OS on.
  2. An SSD enclosure. https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B08DNR22Q7
  3. A working computer.
  4. Win to USB https://www.easyuefi.com/wintousb/
  5. A copy of Windows 10. I have a copy of Windows 10 21H1 you can download here

First install the SSD into the enclosure securely and screw into place.

Now plug in the data cable to the computer format the disk to NTFS then download a program called Win2USB run and install it select the target device (the SSD) and proceed when it’s complete exit the program and boot from the SSD by pressing the function key relevant to your computer model select the SSD which will show up as a USB to boot from it.

If everything has gone successfully it should work, do some tests then reboot, to make sure you don’t go back to your primary system go into the UEFI and repeat the last step again this time after a few minutes you should be able to start the setup to Windows as a new installation.
